Zero Food Waste Coalition Hosts Food Loss and Waste Prevention Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

Last week, the Zero Food Waste Coalition hosted an in-person advocacy day on Capitol Hill—attended by 35+ of its members—to continue urging Congress to prioritize food loss and waste (FLW) prevention efforts in federal policy. Given the recent movement on the 2024 Farm Bill, fiscal year 2025 Appropriations, and the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics earlier that same week, the Coalition was eager to build upon the momentum and continue the conversation around FLW prevention and reduction.

In order to do so, Coalition members met with 25+ Congressional offices representing 14 states. During the meetings, the Coalition advocated for its Farm Bill priorities—such as the NO TIME TO Waste Act and the Food Date Labeling Act—as well as its FLW requests for FY 2025 Appropriations.

The Coalition is hoping the day’s events result in opportunities to advance FLW, as well as amplification of the need to make substantial changes to reach the U.S.’s goal of reducing FLW by 50% by 2030.

The Zero Food Waste Coalition aims to inform and influence policy at the local, state, and federal levels, and share policy updates and opportunities with partners and stakeholders around the country to bring consumers, businesses, and government together to make food loss and waste history. The Coalition was launched by NRDC, WWF, ReFED, and FLPC in April 2023, formalizing a partnership that began in January 2020.
