The Zero Food Waste Act introduced in Congress

The Zero Food Waste Act introduced by Representatives Julia Brownley (CA), Ann McLane Kuster (NH), Chellie Pingree (ME), and Senator Cory Booker (NJ) would advance a core element of the Food Loss and Waste Action Plan. The Act would provide state governments, Native nations, and local communities with an alternative to sending food waste to landﬁlls and incinerators and support building out the nation’s food waste management infrastructure—creating quality new jobs, and significantly reducing GHG emissions.

Specifically, the bill would provide state and local leaders with resources to scale up food loss and waste prevention, measurement, rescue, and recycling to help put the US on a path towards achieving its national goal of reducing food loss and waste 50% by 2030 and transforming our food system to benefit people and the planet.

The Zero Food Waste Coalition aims to inform and influence policy at the local, state, and federal levels, and share policy updates and opportunities with partners and stakeholders around the country to bring consumers, businesses, and government together to make food loss and waste history. The Coalition was launched by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), ReFED, and The Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC) in April 2023, formalizing a partnership that began in January 2020.
